Documentary photography is about telling stories, and the story told in the gallery above is that of Darren Ainsworth, a blacksmith who works near Buxton in the Peak District. It’s a fine example of how documentary photography can be used to promote a small business.
As in all of my documentary photography, none of the shots is staged or posed. I joined Darren in his forge where he was working for the afternoon. Having established the boundaries of where I could photograph safely and without interfering with Darren’s work, I began the task of assembling a photographic narrative which was both authentic and eye-catching. The whole shoot took just a few hours, but the result is a series of images which can be used on a website or in promotional literature to good effect.
